I heart newborns

I did my first newborn shoot for some friends of ours the other day,
as well as their new little family of four,
and completely loved it!

I think the best part of photography, for me, is the complete lack of
pressure-to-make-a-business out of it.
After years of my own catering business and the headaches that come with moving your work forward,
it is so relaxing to think in terms of art and what makes me happy- not to mention having fun!

I'll post on the whole family soon,
but in the mean time you can swoon over this little angel.

Gettin' Our Ugly On

Ryan and I decided to host our very first Ugly Sweater Party to get ourselves into the proper holiday spirit now that finals are a thing of the past.  So we squished six couples into our little apartment, opened the windows to counter the heat of bulky weaving, and had a fabulous time!

Please forgive the quality of the photos- it was dark, and I couldn't find my flash before the festivities began-
but I don't really care, because this much fun had to be documented one way or another!

My particular favorite was 'Ryan the Gameshow host'- complete with tacky polyester blazer
and a slew of Christmas movie trivia.

Inevitably, boys against girls brought us some entertaining Spouse-offs!

Then it was time for ribbons & awards for
Ugly, Uglier, & Ugliest...

In the process of handing them out, we discovered I had a twin at the party

Our 'Ugliest' award went to Ryan (not mine), whose bearded beanie was the talk of the night-
love that I barely come to his ribbon!  He had something like 15 inches on me!

The Ugly winners (a 'tight-knit' group)-
and a renegade sneaking cookies in the background!

A party this fun might just have to become a tradition!

Afternoon Wrestle

My parents made the drive down from Island Park yesterday to attend
our ward Primary Program and have dinner with us.
Afterward we managed to squeeze in a little Charlie Brown Christmas,
more than enough of Grandma Jean's chocolate drop cookies,
and Reese's all-time favorite: wrestling with Grandpa.

For the record, Grandpa is one tough cookie.

We loved having you-
thanks for sharing our Sunday Mom & Dad!

I'll take one farm, please- hold the chickens!

Last Sunday Ryan decided to help the kids write their Christmas letters to Santa,
and here's what they both came up with all on their own!

Dear Santa,

My name is Reese.
For Christmas I want a horse,
and a goat, and a pig,
and some puppies,
and a cow,
and a big farm to keep them on.

And a bike.

Thank you,
Reese

Dear Santa,

I'm Sam
For Christmas I want an orange gun,
and a gunbelt,
and a horse, and a cowboy hat, and some boots,
and a rope.

I'm a cowboy.

Thank you,
Sam

My favorite part about Sam's, is that he already owns all of these things.
I'm sure he'll get the hang of the wishlist by next year!
And our sweet Reese, well lucky for us she doesn't realize that Santa
is actually supposed to deliver the things on your Christmas list yet.

Whew! Dodged a bullet there-
a little short on space in our little two-bedroom to make room for a full-fledged farm!

I'm a Snow Machine!

Being the Idaho girl that I am, the last few months has been extremely strange- disturbing even-
in their lack of snowy precipitation.
No matter how many times I watch The Muppet Christmas Carol (best Christmas movie EVER, just in case you were wondering),
or blast Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole's holiday tunes,
I just haven't been able to jump into the Christmas spirit with both feet.
And I completely blame the weather.
That's right, it's all your fault Clouds, and you're officially fired.
Wanna know why?
Cause after watching this sweet snowflake tutorial,
I've decided I no longer need you.

Yeah, I've got it covered.
I may not have any feeling left in my right ring finger from all the cutting,
but, unlike some others I know, I am happy to take one for the team.

So even if you refuse to decorate the world- like you're supposed to each year
(insert sound of throat clearing),
at least my dining room will be decked in snowy love.

Also, not to kick you while you're down,
but I think it looks pretty magical,
wondrous,
and
well, let's just say it-

A Winter Wonderland.

That being said, I don't want to burn any bridges, so if you decide
you want to go ahead and deliver sometime soon
I won't hold any grudges.

Salt & Avocados

If you know me you know that I love food.
French food in particular.
And there are a few foods that instantly take me back
to the year-and-a-half I lived in Paris as a missionary for my church.

It's hard to believe it's been more than seven years since I returned.
Despite the years I still can't get enough of tearing off the end of a baguette,
dipping into the Nutella jar and getting my knuckles covered in chocolate,
or eating ripe avocado sprinkled with sea salt.

Yesterday was the birthday of one of my dearest friends, a woman I met while working in the heart of Paris,
someone who was so different from any friend I'd had before-
She was Haitian, a single mother of three, and had come to Paris on her own years before.
She spoke no English and I almost no French,
but somehow we found ourselves eating and laughing ourselves to tears together on a regular basis.

She cooked and cleaned for a cantankerous old woman called Madame Mouche ('Madame Fly'), and the stories she told- or rather acted out since I couldn't yet grasp the words-
had us shrieking and weeping with laughter in her small but immaculate kitchen.
Having worked a similar job myself while in college, I could relate and, occasionally,
add my own charades to the production.

Each time we visited, Raymonde cooked, I ate, and we became closer.
The food she prepared was simple-
a scrambled egg with thin slices of shallot,
fried plantains for dipping in black bean sauce,
a sliced baguette wrapped around a bar of Milka chocolate,
and slices of ripe avocado dusted with a pinch of salt.

I ate like royalty at her house-
and the lesson I learned from her,
other than il faut prends son temps when you walk in heels, was that,
more important than any ingredient combination or particular technique you could use,
was the pure joy and love you put into your cooking.

Happy Birthday,  Chere Raymonde!
Tu as changé ma vie pour toujours.

Muscle Love

My yoga instructor is an incredible, inspiring fifty-something Japanese woman that is about as hard core as they come. She also happens to teach a stellar spin class, and her legs...well, someday when I grow up I would weep with joy if mine could only look half as good as hers.  Sigh.

Anyway, I've been feeling pretty good about myself the last few classes as my balance improves (stayed upright for the entire tree pose today, thank you very much!), I'm becoming more flexible, and it seems I'm one of the few that can keep up with her- ignoring, of course, the minor detail that more than half the class qualifies for Sizzler's senior discount.
Ahem, like I was saying, I've been thinking I was pretty cool... smooth...fancy pants on her way to Yoga Master status, etc.  That is, until Ryan showed me this video.  Of course, this was right after I suggested he maybe should come up with a few pretzel nicknames, you know... just to try 'em out in case we'd need to adopt one or two in the future.

Umm, yeah- Never Mind!

Despite the healthy dose of humility it delivered, I just can't get over the beauty of watching these two move.  Granted, I do feel as though I'm intruding a bit on a private moment,
but I still can't bring myself to look away.
It's just gorgeous.

And good heavens, do I have a solid appreciation for
this woman's core!
